Job Description
● Supporting volunteers and customers in our DIY workshops
● Completing a scheduled bike repairs in our Repair workshop
● Refurbishing a second hand bike for resale in our Bike Sale workshop
● Supporting volunteers in their learning in our Bike Recycling workshop
● Preparing and Teaching customers about bike maintenance in our Bike maintenance courses
● Or, some of our Community Outreach activities such as Dr Bike session
Responsibilities:
● Oversee and support all activities in the workshop during scheduled sessions.
● Ensure customers have a positive experience and leave with safe and reliable bikes.
● Maintain the workshop as a healthy and safe environment and ensure our safer spaces policy is adhered to.
● Deliver professional, accessible and helpful customer service to our diverse customer base.
● Process card and cash transactions as required, ensuring transactions are recorded accurately and that the daily cashing is completed appropriately.
● Where applicable manage and support workshop volunteers including identifying appropriate tasks for them to carry out.
● Provide your availability for the rota in a timely manner to the Mechanics Team Lead.
● Update the Mechanics Team Lead with any required stock items as and when necessary and advise of any general issues as required.
● Ensure the workshop space is maintained in a safe condition both during and after each session. The workshop should always be left in a clean and tidy condition at the end of each shift.
● Get involved with the team helping to design new courses or planning workshop improvements or developing policies.
● Bike Sales Recycling
○ Refurbish bikes and ensure that they are refurbished to a safe and reliable
condition, ready for purchase.
○ Ensure all relevant documentation is completed to an accurate standard.
● Bike Recycling
○ Support and guide all volunteers ensuring they have an opportunity to learn and develop their skills in bike mechanics.
○ Provide hands on help if necessary but to ensure volunteers are given the best opportunity to learn they should be guided by the Lead Mechanic whilst completing the task themselves.
○ Ensure that relevant bikes for each shift are refurbished to a safe and reliable
condition, ready for purchase.
○ Ensure all relevant documentation is completed to an accurate standard.
● DIY Sessions
○ Allow customers to repair their own bikes providing support and guidance where required.
○ Organise and manage volunteers in order to give customers support and guidance but also in helping to maintain the workshop during each session.
● Repair Sessions
○ Ensure safe, reliable and timely repairs to customers' bikes.
● Bike Repair Workshops
○ Participate in developing, preparing and delivering workshops covering a variety of different topics, these can be at the Broken Spoke workshop or out in the community.
● Ad-hoc activities
○ Broken Spokes aims to get as many people involved in cycling as possible therefore increasingly our community outreach programmes involves other activities outside our standard programmes, these could be Dr Bike sessions in a local park or Led Rides out to the beautiful Oxfordshire Countryside, or anything else that helps us with our aims.
Skills/Experience Required
Essential:
● Excellent mechanical skills (at least Cytech L2 or equivalent hands on experience).
● Passion for bike mechanics, problem-solving skills and desire to continue acquiring new knowledge in this field.
● Commitment to our mission of accessibility to all in cycling and mechanics.
● Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to work with people from all backgrounds.
● Strong commitment to cycling, community-building and sustainability
● Ability to manage a team of volunteers.
● Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
● Organisational skills - ability to communicate by email and use google calendar
Desirable:
● previous experience in a community or commercial workshop setting.
● Teaching experience in any field and interest in innovative teaching methodology
● Hold a First Aid qualification*.
* Full training will be provided if you do not meet these requirements.
