Arguably just a heavier-duty touring bike.
Built for long-distance (often 4000km+) off road expeditions, these machines are built tough. Designed to require little maintenance, these mountain bikes often forego the derailleur gear systems, hydraulic brakes and suspension found on their brethren in favour of internal hub gears, mechanical disc brakes and rigid steel frames.
